After three years of service my noisy home server is dead. I used it for torrent and storage of important backups, and now I have all my important (and not so important) stuff lost on it.. so what to do? build a better one obviously!!!

The most stringent requirement for the new server is to be as quiet as possible! So the choice of motherboard and power supply will be very important. I think I will keep the 3 sata drives in it since they have all my data on them ( raid5 )
The new atom platform seems the perfect match for this task: it’s not as power hungry as a standard processor and can bemade fanless. Also some boards can be powered by a fanless 19V power brick, for complete silence! Great!.
The MSI Industrial IM-945GC Atom Mini-ITX Mainboard is the ideal candidate. It is fanless, it has four sata ports annd gigabit ethernet. Did I mention it is fanless? The fan in the photo can be removed.

Features of the new one will be: (and were for the old server)
- 1TB of software raid 5 storage
- gigabit ethernet
- ubuntu server edition
- samba / afs shared storage
- time machine partition – rsync backups
- cups printer sharing on mac/win network
- rTorrent active 24/7
- python script to fetch new tv shows :)
- web server / sandbox
- maybe some notification leds like this
- SILENT at last!
For the build I will be putting all pieces together in a compact way, maybe an old dvd reader/vcr case.
I am just looking for a reseller of the board in Italy, to finally get back to all my data!
