I’ve found this guide to root galaxy s3 on mac. I hoped it was a quick process, but instead I’ve spent many hours rebooting and getting into the standard recovery partition rather than getting into the ClockWorkMod custom recovery image that the guide makes you download to the phone. So I thought I’d share the updated steps that will allow you to root galaxy s3 on mac, even with android version 4.1.2 or
First download this rootkit to your mac: GalaxyS3RootMac.zip, it contains a program called heimdall to flash files on the phone, plus the actual image files that will go on the device itself.
STEP1: install heimdall-suite-1.3.2-mac.dmg and reboot your mac;
STEP2: put the file CWM-SuperSU-v0.87.zip on your phone. We will install it later. I used android file transfer to put the file on the phone.
STEP3: prepare Heimdall for flashing:
STEP 4: put the phone in download mode: push the HOME + VOLUME DOWN + POWER buttons at the same time until the phone reboots and you see the samsung galaxy s3 static white logo. You should see the following screen and push volume up to continue:
STEP 5: connect the phone to your mac with a micro usb cable, and push “start” in heimdall. This will flash the recovery partition on the phone (10 seconds) and you will see a completed blue progress bar on the download mode screen.
STEP 6: it’s time to boot into the recovery image flashed in STEP3: push HOME + VOLUME UP + POWER buttons at the same time to enter recovery mode.
STEP 7: select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card”. Browse to where you put CWM-SuperSU-v0.87.zip from STEP2 and install it. Then go back to first screen and reboot to a rooted phone.
